Events and Exhibitions

2017

1 - 8 April 2017
2017 Barbirolli International Oboe Festival & Competition
Venue: Erin Arts Centre, Isle of Man

The 4th Barbirolli International Oboe Festival and Competition will take place at the Erin Arts Centre, Isle of Man from 1 - 8 April 2017 in association with Howarth of London.

The Barbirolli International Oboe Festival and Competition is one the most prestigious oboe events in the world and is named after the English oboist Evelyn Rothwell (Lady Barbirolli), wife of the distinguished conductor Sir John Barbirolli. Established in 1993, the festival now stands as ‘a memorial to a great protagonist for the oboe who did so much to further the interests of this most distinctive and expressive instrument and is a major event for aspiring professional oboists from all over the world’, according to its president, George Caird.

The competition has been held in the Isle of Man since 2005 when it transferred from the Isle of Wight. Over the years, the Festival and Competition have done much to promote young oboists and to encourage new music for the instrument through its commissioned works. Like its counterpart, the Tertis International Viola Competition, the oboe competition is promoted within a festival that offers recitals by distinguished oboists, masterclasses and seminars.

We will be taking a selection of oboes and cors anglais, and a limited stock of oboe and cor accessories.

If you have any specific requests, please let us know in advance.

REVISED DATE! Saturday 22nd April 2017 @ 1pm
James Morton at Howarth!
Venue: Howarth Saxophone Dept, 31 Chiltern Street, London, W1U 7PN

James Morton is one of the most exciting saxophone players of his generation. His solo album, The Kid, was released in June 2016 with an all-star line-up, including a four-piece horn section and an array of special guests including Fred Wesley, Pee Wee Ellis, Andy Sheppard, Ian Mathews (Kasabian), Ollie Teeba and The Easy Access Horns (The Herbaliser). As a teenager he was heavily influenced by hip-hop, jazz and the funk music of James Brown. He has worked extensively over the past 15 years with Pee-Wee Ellis and recently recorded and performed with Fred Wesley and The New JB’s. He is also a member of British hip-hop legends The Herbaliser, with whom he continues to tour and collaborate.

The masterclass will be centred around a funk and groove based vibe. Focusing on phrasing, articulation, inflection, three note motivic development and tone. Put some funk in your playing and come along for a fun and informal masterclass with one of the UK's most exciting alto players.
